Level 1 Mechanical Engineering (L1MEC)

Overview

This course enables you to learn basic metal working skills using hand tools and machines.

What will I learn?

This course involves a short safety assignment followed by two projects, one of which involves some elements of design. You will make a gear stick for an authentic stakeholder, a well known rally car driver, who will act as a stakeholder for your work. You will make a marking gauge for your second project. 

What should I have done already?

You should have successfully completed Year 10 Materials Technology (10MTK) in order to have the skills needed for this course. Or at the discretion of the Head of Technology.

Assessment regulations

The assessment tasks in this course are all done on paper. Practical work will support the written assessment tasks but is not directly assessed.

Every student in this course will be required to sign a contract regarding the use of the school workshop and the tools and equipment. Breaking the contract will result in removal from the class.

Every standard in this course contains written tasks to be completed. Students who are entitled to reader/writer assistance need to draw this to the attention of the teacher at the beginning of the school year so that assistance can be arranged well before the deadlines of the assessment.

Due dates will be advised by your teacher and are not negotiable. Incomplete work will not be assessed subject to the school NCEA policy.

Metalworking is dirty work

You are responsible for protecting your clothing. A dust coat or overalls are recommended.
