Level 1 Foundation English (L1ENL)

Overview

The English course is a blend of the academic, the practical and the creative. You will work to develop the basic spelling skills necessary for accurate writing that is individual in thought and expression. The course also involves the study of literature, personal reading, research, the media, static images, drama and oral work in a wide variety of everyday situations.

English is a compulsory subject for all Year 11 students.

What will I learn?

You will be involved in individual oral and written work designed to extend your imagination, to develop your powers of reasoning and analysis, and generally to gain confidence and experience in the handling of English in many forms through your personal response, and also through your participation in group activities.

What should I have done already?

English at Year 9 and Year 10 is the foundation for the year's work.

Level 1 standards: 18 credits

Teachers will confirm course credit values based on the learners in their classes.

The standards offered will be differentiated to align with each student’s individual learning needs and abilities. The priority of this course is to build functional literacy skills that support lifelong learning and effective communication. Students will develop greater confidence and capability in reading, writing, and speaking, while also working towards credits that contribute to their NCEA qualification. This course does prepare students for Level 2 Foundation English.

Preparation for Class
Students are expected to arrive prepared for learning, with the required materials and equipment, and to be ready to participate fully in each lesson. Regular attendance and effective use of class time are important for success.

Work Ethic
Students are expected to approach their learning with commitment and take responsibility for completing classwork and assessment preparation to the best of their ability. This includes meeting deadlines, responding to feedback, and seeking support when needed.

Academic Integrity
All submitted work must authentically represent the student’s own thinking and writing. Plagiarism, inappropriate use of AI, or presenting another person’s work or voice as one’s own is a breach of academic integrity and will be managed in accordance with College and the English Department assessment procedures.
