This foundational Level 3 English course is designed to strengthen students’ literacy skills to support success in future work, study, and life. The course emphasises practical communication and language skills, while still engaging students with a range of accessible literary and visual texts. Students will explore relevant themes and ideas, developing their ability to read with understanding, write with clarity, and express themselves confidently.
While academic success remains important, with pathways to achieving the 14 credits required for University Entrance, this course also prioritises functional literacy, critical thinking, and effective communication. The goal is to empower students to use language purposefully and confidently in a range of settings beyond the classroom.
Entrance to English Literacy ideally requires a minimum of 8 Level 2 Achievement Standard credits in English, including 5 credits in reading or 5 credits in writing from any of the Level 2 English courses offered. However, students may consult with the HOLA if this prerequisite has not been met.
