Level 1 Te Reo Māori (L1MAO)

Overview

Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori (Language is the life force of Māori). This full-year course will explore elements of te ao Māori (the Māori world) and build on basic skills to develop your use and understanding of te reo Māori to achieve social competence. This will involve the four strands of language: Whakarongo (listening), Kōrero (speaking), Tuhituhi (writing), and Pānui (reading) as well as many interactive activities that are both independent and cooperative.

What will I learn?

You will be able to converse with te reo Māori speakers in familiar social situations and cope with some less familiar ones. They can use basic Māori language patterns spontaneously. They show a willingness to experiment with new language and to read independently. They can write short passages, personal letters, and simple formal letters in te reo Māori. Students are increasingly confident in using a range of strategies for learning te reo Māori and for communicating with others in predominantly Māori social contexts.

What should I have done already?

Māori at Year 10 will provide a solid foundation for level 1.

You should have an understanding of Te Ao Māori and be able to mihimihi.
