Year 8 Physical Education and Health (8PED)

Overview

Physical Education and Health is compulsory for all year 8 students and is taken for four periods a week (three periods of Physical Education, one period of Health). The focus is on the well being of the students themselves through learning in health related and movement contexts. There are four strands of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum that underpin the learning in this subject area:

  • Personal Health and Physical Development

  • Movement Concepts and Motor Skills

  • Relationships with other People

  • Health Communities and Environments

What will I learn?

The key values of; Safety management, Being actively involved, Movement and Motor skills, Relationships and Teamwork, Engaging a positive attitude and Interpersonal skills use are delivered through the practical element. Topics are generally considered from the following; Volleyball, Turbo Touch, Badminton, Swimming, Ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee Golf, Lacrosse, Gymnastics, Biophysical Fitness and Games around the world.

In the key learning area of Health, student's will have opportunities to explore the ways in which the physical, mental and emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of hauora contribute to healthy living. Health related topics include but are not limited to; digital citizenship, body image and self esteem, the DARE programme (delivered by the police liaison officer), diversity and stereotypes, mindfulness and the sexuality road.
