Level 1 Mathematics and Algebra (L1MAA) - Phase 5
This course builds on the skills learnt in previous years by applying strategies to solve problems using a variety of number skills, extending trigonometric skills to involve three-dimensional shapes and developing more algebraic skills. Statistical methods are used to explore relationships and probabilities are determined in a variety of situations.
Problem Solving, developing logic and reasoning and communication of mathematical ideas will be part of all content areas. Students are required to consider the context of problems.
What will I learn?
Numeracy concepts for everyday life
Basic statistical analysis skills
Foundation algebra skills
Foundation geometry and trigonometry skills
What should I have done already?
There are no entry requirements for this course - you will be directed into a Level 1 course by the Head of Learning Area and your teacher, based on your performance in Year 10.
You will be assessed by Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics achievement standards, with credits contributing towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). There are a maximum of 15 Level 1 credits available in this course. This course is eligible for a subject endorsement. Two of the achievement standards for this Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics course will be assessed internally during the year and one will be assessed in November.
There will be NO reassessment opportunity for the internally assessed standards for students who do not achieve the standard in the first attempt. If you cannot attend an assessment because of illness, you must produce a medical certificate upon your return to school and you will be expected to complete the internal assessment on the day of your return to school.
