Level 1 Tikanga Māori (L1TKM)
Overview
This is a full-year course that will broadly explore issues for Māori in accordance with traditional Māori society, the arrival of Pākehā and early interactions with Māori, the land wars of the 1800s and the impact of Christianity. our history as well as traditional Māori practice such as pōwhiri.
The second part of this course looks at tikanga concepts in terms of whakapapa and looks at the cosmological stories (ngā taonga tuku iho) through to modern whānau settings. Students will then understand each aspect of the pōwhiri and participate in welcoming manuhiri to our space.
What will I learn?
Describe the characteristics and actions of a selected atua in accordance with ngā kōrero tuku iho
Describe the terms associated with whakapapa and use them within a family structure
Describe the protocols and roles associated with pōwhiri in accordance with tikan
Describe the relationship between Māori and Pākehā prior to 1840
Describe the wars between Māori and Pākehā during the 1800s in accordance with ngā kōrero tuku iho
Explain the impact of Christianity on te ao Māori in accordance with ngā kōrero tuku iho
