Level 3 Computing (L3COM)

Overview

Term 1 and 2 AS 3.4 and 3.8

You will create a professional website that has good design and function and that links dynamically to a relational database.

You will need to use HTML and CSS coding to create your website and include other media eg images, graphs and text. You will need to write PHP code to allow for a dynamic linking enabling the editing of the database via the website. Your website will be multi platform and include GPS updating. This is a large 10 credit project and special care will be taken with the planning.

Term 3 AS 3.7

You will further develop your programming skills and include classes, objects and GUI in your code.

Term 4 AS 3.9

This is an external assessment that involves investigating Complexity and Tractability. We will be looking at the real life situations as a means of understanding this area of Computer Science. We will explore problems and algorithms that can take an impossible amount of computation and therefore an unreasonable amount of time, to solve.

What will I learn?

    • Skills to enable you to do well in large project work

    • Webpage creation dynamically linked to databases

    • To incorporate a variety of technologies to create a fit for purpose product including HTML, CSS, PHP, mySQL, Javascript, digital media, and GPS syncing

    • Programming classes and GUI

    • You will investigate Computer Vision and how a computer actually "sees"

What should I have done already?

You should have successfully completed at least one year of Computing.

External assessments will be a written portfolio which will be submitted electronically.

Assessment regulations

There will usually not be an opportunity for reassessment.

    • There is no reassessment opportunity for students who do not hand work in on time.

    • Each unit will have a deadline and you will be given these closer to the start of each topic. Deadlines, obviously must be met.

Authenticity and appeals

Assessment work completed must be your own work.

To achieve course endorsement, you will need at least 14 credits including the external.
